Earth Day Celebrations Get Innovative for 2021

(Secaucus, NJ––April 22, 2021) High Tech High School’s got creative and found ways to celebrate Earth Day during a week-long series of events in spite of the pandemic’s school-related restrictions, announced Dr. Joseph Giammarella, Principal of High Tech High School.

The week of events, which began on April 15 and culminated on April 22, consisted of several competitions where students from every academy were invited to strut their sustainability stuff to earn prizes and generate awareness of the myriad climate challenges we are collectively experiencing. Winners earned points through various competitions and included Layaly Saleh whose won for upcycling used materials in the sustainability challenge and Olubusayomi Afolabi who earned the most points during Environmental Trivia Night––which was the culminating event after a session of student presentations on various topics including reusing materials, composting, sustainable energy, and severe weather events.

The week was hosted by the Environmental Club and the Environmental Club leadership team, and organized by the club president Kate Neal, and secretary Fiona Bezhani. Presentations and Kahoots for the trivia night were made by Environmental Club members Kareem Rhaburn, Alfonse Sessa, Grace Conlon, and Alexander Pereyra. All of the week’s events were overseen by Environmental Club coordinator and HTHS environmental science instructor Cathy Yuhas.
