Description

Students dive into the creative and technical realms of producing complete broadcast projects, mastering all aspects of production, everything from scriptwriting to editing. Emphasizing journalistic integrity, the program focuses on the art of storytelling, teaching students to gather digital news and conduct thorough research to create compelling, fact-based content.
One of the most thrilling aspects of the program is the opportunity to work with High Tech's very own Radio Station, WHIT. Here, students can develop and produce their own radio segments and podcast programs, gaining hands-on experience in a real broadcasting environment. This modern facility enhances web streaming capabilities, allowing students to reach a wider audience and engage with the latest broadcasting technology.

The assignments are diverse and hands-on, designed to immerse students in every aspect of television production. They will begin with screenwriting, transforming their imaginative concepts into compelling scripts. Storyboarding will follow, allowing them to visualize and plan each scene meticulously. Scene design and casting will teach them the art of creating believable worlds and characters while assembling a crew will provide valuable lessons in teamwork and collaboration.

Students will create detailed shot lists and participate in in-class productions, gaining practical experience behind the camera. The process will also involve multiple rounds of revisions and re-edits, teaching them the importance of refining their work to achieve the best possible outcome. This intensive journey culminates in the submission of a final project that showcases their growth and skills.

Additionally, students will learn to effectively market themselves by creating comprehensive resumes that showcase their skills in directing, cinematography, editing, and sound design. The primary goal of the class is to equip students with marketable skills for the dynamic motion picture and broadcasting industries, ensuring they graduate with a proud portfolio and the confidence and expertise needed to succeed in video production, radio, and television.

My experience in the media industry has played a substantial role in my journey, which began with an open house at High Tech High School in 2013. I was originally interested in pursuing a major in culinary arts, but the Audio Visual CTE teacher at the time encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and explore the broadcasting studio. I fell in love immediately. The educational and practical experience was a turning point for me; it inspired me to pursue a career in audio and visual production which fulfills me.

Now, ten years later, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to pursue a position at the same school that initiated my career. There are endless career opportunities in media production, and the most desirable to me is being a teacher within the field. I am eager to apply personal expertise and knowledge acquired through my college degree and field experience, applying the essential skills needed for success in today’s media landscape in my teachings. I look forward to personally inspiring students to pursue a career they are interested and passionate about, and especially giving them the foundation, knowledge, and tools required for success.
