(Secaucus, NJ––February 13, 2020) On February 11th, 2020, the High Tech High School March For Our Lives club volunteered at the Community Foodbank of New Jersey headquarters in Hillside, NJ, where they worked hard to combat hunger and food insecurity, announced Dr. Joseph Giammarella, Principal at High Tech High School.
Twenty-seven students from High Tech High School, and three CulSci (Culinary/Science) Academy teachers––club advisor Ms. Krystyne Guarente and instructors Mrs. Kimberly Braun and Mr. William Goold––prepared shipments of goods that will assist those in need. For almost two hours, volunteers worked in groups setting up materials, sorting and separating food and other goods, packing and labeling boxes, shrink wrapping pallets for shipment, breaking down excess boxes, and cleaning work areas. As a result of their hard work, eleven pallets were filled with a total of two-hundred and sixty-four boxes of food and other goods, all ready to help support fellow New Jerseyans.
Club Co-Presidents Caitlyn Ramdat, Briana Dominici, and Cabinet Member Sophia DelRosario organized the event as a way to help the community and create positive change through student empowerment and involvement, two major goals of the MFOL club. The students had an overwhelmingly positive experience through their contribution to eliminate hunger and poverty within the state. They are looking forward to continuing to work with the Foodbank on future trips.
The Community Foodbank of New Jersey is the state's largest organization committed to fighting hunger and poverty. An estimated 900,000 New Jersey residents face hunger every day, with more than a third of that number being children.
