(Secaucus, NJ––June 14, 2021) The Students in Action Club lived up to their name this year, collecting over 550 pounds of clothing in March and over 4,500 products for women and infants through May and June, announced Dr. Joseph A. Giammarella, Principal at High Tech High School.
Under the guidance of club moderator and HTHS instructor Krystyne Guarente, the Students in Action Club collaborated with Hunger Free Unity In the Community, a not-for-profit organization championing food equity in Hudson County through healthy food distribution and nutrition education, to host a spring cleaning clothing drive through the month of March. The drive was a huge success, having collected over 550 lbs of clothing, 50 pairs of shoes, and countless bedsheets, towels, handbags, and more. The items were then donated to a free store event in Union City where community members could pick up any clothing and food they needed at no charge.
Heading into May and June, the members kept in action, this time collaborating with Her Drive, an organization that focuses on collecting hygiene products and other necessities for women and infants in need. Working with multiple local businesses, club members set up boxes throughout Hudson County. This approach resulted in an enormous amount of donations from community members and institutions such as the Jersey City Medical Center. All told, nearly 4,800 items were donated and will be shared to various groups including WomenRising in Jersey City and the Hoboken Shelter.
The Students in Action Club is led by co-President Caitlyn Ramdat and Briana Dominic, Vice President Natalia Czepielewski, and Secretary Sarah Dziekan.
