Art Comes Alive: High Tech French students Step “Beyond the Frame” at Grounds for Sculpture

On June 8th, High Tech French students traded their traditional classroom setting for an immersive, cross-cultural journey through art and history at the renowned Grounds for Sculpture (GFS) in Hamilton, New Jersey. The experiential field trip allowed students to bridge the gap between French language, art history, and nature.

The 42-acre sculpture park served as the perfect backdrop for students to explore the intersection of 19th-century French Impressionism and contemporary public art.

French students had the unique opportunity to literally step "inside" some of France's most celebrated paintings. The itinerary featured interactive viewings of masterwork recreations, including:

  • Claude Monet’s Water Lilies and Japanese Bridge, situated over the park’s serene lily ponds.
  • Édouard Manet’s Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe (Lunch on the Grass), reimagined as the installation Déjeuner déjà vu?.
  • Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party, titled Were You Invited?, where students walked among the sculpted figures on a realistic terrace.
  • Gustave Caillebotte’s Paris Street; Rainy Day, capturing 19th-century Parisian urban life.

"Seeing our students interact with French cultural history in such a tangible, physical way is incredibly rewarding," said Dr. Laje Gashi, French teacher and Club Advisor. "Instead of just looking at pictures of Monet or Renoir in a textbook, they were able to walk through the scenery, look at the angles the painters chose, and discuss the artwork. It brings the language and culture to life."
