Dear HCST Community,
I am writing to share my thoughts, memories, and reflections on the life of Shayaan Mahmood, a remarkable young man who left us far too soon. As Shayaan’s school counselor, I had the privilege of witnessing his growth over the past three years. From moderating the Chess Club to supporting him during one of his most challenging moments, I was honored to be part of his journey and cherish the many wonderful memories of his high school years.
When I first learned of Shayaan’s tragic accident, I was deeply shaken. Even now, I often find myself reflecting on the immense potential and promise that was taken from us, his family, and the world. In this moment of remembrance, I feel it is important to share an excerpt from the recommendation letter I wrote for Shayaan’s college applications—a testament to his extraordinary character and accomplishments:
“It is with great enthusiasm that I recommend Shayaan Mahmood, a brilliant and motivated young man who ranks within the top 1% of his class at High Tech High School. From his freshman year onward, Shayaan demonstrated a proactive approach to learning, excelling academically while immersing himself in diverse extracurricular activities. His ambition, intelligence, and wit made him a standout student, and he consistently strived to be the best in everything he undertook. His impressive achievements and dedication are a testament to his potential for success in college and beyond.
Shayaan aspired to attend college to major in computer science with a minor in business, focusing on a career in data science. He recognized that success in this field requires a blend of technical expertise, adaptability, creativity, and strong communication skills. Over the years, he showcased these qualities through his academic excellence and leadership roles. His positions as Vice President of the Student Council and Secretary of the Muslim Student Association reflected his ability to communicate effectively and adapt to various team environments. His involvement in activities such as the Chess Team, Math League, founding Game Developers of the Future (GDOT), Drum Club, Lego Build It Club, Cricket Club, Hiking Club, Business Club, Judo, and participating in the Model United Nations (MUN) Club underscored his drive to grow intellectually and personally. Shayaan was adaptive, confident, ambitious, collaborative, and authentic—qualities he consistently brought to every endeavor.”
As we continue to honor Shayaan’s memory, I am reminded of the profound impact he had on everyone he encountered. Shayaan lived with an incredible zest for life, embracing every opportunity and infusing joy into all he did. His humor, wit, and genuine heart made him a pleasure to be around. He was always eager to share his knowledge, support others, and give back to his community. I am confident that Shayaan would have been accepted to all the colleges and universities on his list, and his future would have been as bright and boundless as his spirit. He will forever be remembered for his love of learning, his passion for helping others, his unwavering faith, his dedication to family, and his unrelenting authenticity.
Shayaan Mahmood was an extraordinary young man, and his absence is felt deeply. May we continue to celebrate his life and carry forward his legacy of kindness, curiosity, and love.
